August 2020 - 5th Grade Letter

Dear Fifth Grade Students and Families:

As we prepare for the beginning of a school year like no other, we want you to know how very much we are looking forward to having you join us at West Reading Elementary and how committed we are to providing the safest and educationally-rich environment possible.

The majority of you have attended our fifth-grade orientations on August 19th or 20th.  At that time, you received your student iPad and charger, had the opportunity to tour the building, and received a schoolwork packet that the 5th grade team created for your first week of school.  If you were not able to attend the orientations, we are inviting you to stop by the West Reading Elementary Center on Monday, August 24th at 10:00 to attend a special make-up orientation for those students who did not attend the first offerings.  It is very important that you have those materials and an opportunity to tour the building before the first day of school.

Your child has either chosen to attend school in the hybrid model or full online instruction (WAVE).  The hybrid model has been divided into two groups, group A and group B. Group A will attend school on Mondays and Tuesdays. Group B will attend school Thursdays and Fridays. All students will attend a virtual homeroom meeting on Wednesdays via Webex as well as completing online assignments. The days that your child is not scheduled to be in the building, they will be attending Reading and Math class via Webex at their normal class time in addition to other online assignments.

The first day of school on Monday, August 31st begins at 8:15 AM for hybrid group A and WAVE students – look for the Webex invitation on the Webex app on the school iPad.  For hybrid students, doors will open to students at 8:00, and students will report directly to their homerooms.  Staff will be posted throughout the building to make sure students get to the correct classroom.  Your homeroom assignment and the type of learning mode you have chosen for this year is found on the green HOMEROOM ASSIGNMENT paper enclosed with this letter. Students who are in HYBRID GROUP A will attend school that first day and also the following day, Tuesday September 1st.  WAVE students will attend these days virtually, and HYBRID GROUP B students will complete the learning activities included the beginning of the year packet for those first two days of school.

On Wednesday, September 2nd, all 5th grade students will be learning from home and begin the school day by logging into a homeroom Webex meeting at 8:30 a.m.  This will be the first opportunity for all students to gather with their homeroom classmates and teacher at one time.  Attendance will be taken for that school day during the homeroom meeting and all students will work on learning activities provided in the learning packet.

On Thursday, September 3rd, HYBRID GROUP B students will attend school in person, while the GROUP A students complete schoolwork at home.  WAVE students will attend school virtually using Webex. Schools are closed on Friday, September 4th and Monday, September 7th for the Labor Day holiday.  Hybrid Group A students will resume in-person learning on Tuesday, September 8th.

In addition to your student’s homeroom assignment, there are several important informational items in this mailing including: transportation information (for those designated to ride a bus to school), crisis plan and emergency card, health information form, a traffic pattern map for WREC that points out our parent drop-off area, and PTA forms. Please take the time to read through this information, fill out the required forms completely, and return those to your homeroom teacher the first day you are in school. WAVE students may drop the completed forms off at the WREC main office at their earliest convenience or mail the signed forms back to us in the enclosed envelope.

Communication between school and home is always important, but this year especially.  Parents will receive regular communication from teachers via parent group emails.  Be sure to visit the district website at www.wyoarea.org for updated information on all school events.  The Powerschool Home Access Center (HAC) is also an important informational source that allows parents to monitor their student’s academic progress from home.  Parents may access HAC through the district website.
