May 22, 2020

Dear WREC Family,

I hope this communication finds everyone in your home healthy and that you are able to enjoy the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.  Monday, May 25th is a holiday for students and staff.  We have decided to make the week of May 26-29 a “FOCUS on SPECIALS WEEK”.  Our specialists will be taking over the Webex sessions this week and/or providing some special programming.  We also want this to be a week when all students can catch up on any missing specials assignments for Guidance, Library, Innovations, Physical Education, Music, or Art.  Our Math, ELA, Social Studies, and Science teachers will be assigning less work so that students have more time to focus on the other subjects.

Students should continue to log in to their Schoology accounts daily to check on posted assignments from their teachers, submit assignments, and read messages from their teachers.  Students are also expected to attend daily scheduled Webex online classes with their teachers.   Parents can check their student's 4th quarter progress including attendance for Webex sessions on Home Access Center. You can get to Home Access through our Wyo Area Homepage. There is a quick link on the home page. Make sure you change the view to full view to see “percents” and “RC 4”. RC 4 will be the 4th quarter progress.  If you see an “M” it means a missing assignment. Missing assignments will begin to be counted as “zeros” this week towards fourth quarter grades.  It is important that students take advantage of every opportunity to complete and submit missing work.  For Webex sessions, you will see a 2 or zero. 2 means the student attended and participated. Zero means they missed the Webex session.

We have posted a Sign-up Genius for students to return to WREC the week of June 1-5 to pick up personal items, return library books, clean out desks, lockers, etc.  Please use the sign up that follows to schedule your student’s pick up time:  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0449a4a823a2f94-wrec1.  We are taking appropriate precautions to ensure that this is a safe, efficient way for students to pick up/drop off materials.  Only students will be allowed to enter WREC during their chosen time slot.  Parents should wait in their cars in the designated parking areas on 4thAvenue and Chestnut Street.  Students should wear masks and bring a bag large enough to carry their personal items home as well as bring back any items that belong at school including but not limited to:  library books, school calculators, books/materials borrowed from teachers, etc.  5th Grade students will be allowed to keep their iPads for the summer and then return with them in the fall.  6th grade students must return their iPads this week.  We will provide a mask at school if a student does not have one.  Staff will be spread around WREC to supervise this process.  Appropriate social distancing practices will be utilized, and it is an expectation that all students will work efficiently to return/retrieve materials from the building before meeting back up with their parent outside.  WREC students are allowed to walk to the building by themselves and then return home, so it is not required to have a parent accompany them.  Upon entering the building, students will be given a checklist to guide them through the process.  Please watch for additional information next week.

I wanted to take this opportunity to invite you to take part in a district-wide distance survey.  With the rapid shift to distance learning due to COVID-19, schools across the country have been facing unforeseen challenges and have been working to respond to community needs. Panorama for Distance Learning has created a comprehensive survey that includes questions which address the social, emotional, and academic needs of students, families, and staff in this adjusted school landscape. Wyomissing Area School District is requesting the input of parents, educators and students. Our district’s educators will analyze the results to drive action planning as we look forward to the re-opening of schools, improve student and staff connectedness online, and deliver 1:1 social-emotional and well-being supports for students. We thank you for your input!

Our official last school day is Friday, June 5th.  Teachers will not be posting any new assignments the week of June 1st-5th.  We will use that week to catch up on any missed schoolwork and to close out the 2019-20 school year.   While the school year ends officially on June 5th, we are planning to have virtual summer reading and math academies during the summer months.  More details about our summer academy offerings will be communicated in the coming weeks.  We continue to provide lunch and breakfast meals for all students from 11:00 am – 12:30 pm on Mondays (2 days of meals) and Wednesdays (3 days of meals) at the WREC main entrance.  The last scheduled date for meal distribution is Wednesday, June 3, 2020.  We will not have meal service pick up on Monday May 25th (Memorial Day) and will resume meal pick up on Wednesday, May 27th.

As always, if you have any additional questions, please email me at [email protected], or call me at my extension listed below.  Please continue to do the things which are keeping you healthy, and I hope you/your family have an enjoyable Memorial Day weekend.
