West ReadingElementary Center

West Reading Elementary Center was recognized by the Division of Federal Programs as a Reward—High Progress school for the 2018-2019 school year. The school was specifically recognized for its outcomes in closing the achievement gap between students.

Congratulations to the 2019 West Reading Elementary Center Spelling Bee champion, Adeline Cosentino! Adeline and 18 other fifth- and sixth-grade students competed for a total of 23 rounds. Sixth-grade student Keaton Piacine earned the runner-up title against strong competition. Adeline’s win earned her a spot at the Regional Competition that will be held later this year. Congratulations to all who competed!

For the 31st year, the National Geographic Society is holding its National Geographic GeoBee for fourth- through eighth-grade students in thousands of schools across the nation. The GeoBee is an annual competition designed to inspire and reward students’ curiosity about the world. The event includes three levels of competition: school, state, and national.

Students brought history to life by portraying famous historical figures at the 2019 West Reading Elementary Center Wax Museum. Sixth-grade students posed as wax statues until visitors activated their station by dropping a coin into a bag. Once their station was activated, the students began to move and talk, presenting a dramatic living biography complete with props and beautifully decorated backdrops.

Mrs. Rose Sneeringer’s sixth-grade class at West Reading Elementary Center was in for a special treat when Mrs. Susan Brombacher brought her therapy dog Clara in for a visit. Clara, a nine-yearold Tibetan spaniel, helped teach the important diferences between therapy dogs and service dogs.

With the addition of new technology and a visit from a world-traveling WASD alumnus, what began as a traditional sixth-grade language arts unit at West Reading Elementary Center quickly turned into a memorable experience for the students and their teachers.

This Veterans Day, West Reading Elementary Center honored veterans with a celebration feast at their third annual Veterans Day Breakfast. Together students, staff, and local veterans enjoyed an exciting morning full of activity.

The 10-week, after-school program is led by volunteer coaches, teachers Mrs. Michele Hetrich and Mrs. Shauna Easteadt, and school nurse Mrs. Amy Kern.
